Maximising Your Energy and Productivity in Ramadan: Hacks for an Easier Fast

Ramadan is a time for spiritual reflection, self-discipline, and drawing closer to Allah. But between fasting, late-night prayers, and a changed routine, many people struggle with low energy, fatigue, and staying productive. The good news? Small, intentional tweaks can help you make the most of each day while honouring your fast and your spiritual goals.

Here’s your practical, holistic guide to staying energised, focused, and balanced this Ramadan.

🌙 1. Optimise Your Suhoor for All-Day Energy

Suhoor isn’t just an early breakfast—it’s your body’s fuel tank for the day ahead. What you eat will make all the difference to your energy levels.

Eat Slow-Digesting Foods

  • Complex Carbs: Oats, quinoa, wholegrain bread.

  • Healthy Fats: Nuts, seeds, coconut oil, avocado.

  • Protein: Eggs, Greek yoghurt, cottage cheese.

Hydrate Wisely

  • Drink 500ml–1 litre of water before dawn.

  • Add a pinch of Himalayan salt to help with hydration.

  • Herbal teas like mint or chamomile can soothe digestion.

🚫 Avoid: Salty foods (increase thirst) & refined sugar (cause energy crashes).

💡 Practical Tip: Prep overnight oats or egg muffins to make Suhoor stress-free.

🌙 2. Smart Eating at Iftar to Avoid the Energy Slump

After a long day fasting, it’s tempting to overeat. But heavy, greasy meals drain your energy and make Taraweeh harder.

Break Your Fast the Sunnah Way

  • Start with dates and water to gently raise blood sugar.

  • Sip a light soup or smoothie before a balanced meal.

Eat in Phases

  • After Maghrib, have a plate with protein, fibre, and healthy fats.

  • Chew slowly and savour your meal—don’t rush.

🚫 Avoid: Fried foods, processed sugar, and heavy desserts right away.

💡 Practical Tip: Plan your Iftar menu in advance to stay on track.

🌙 3. Sleep Smarter, Not Longer

Ramadan nights can mean less sleep. Instead of focusing on the number of hours, focus on the quality.

Try Power Naps

  • 20–30 mins mid-afternoon.

  • Short nap before Iftar if needed.

Sleep Hygiene

  • Keep your room dark and cool.

  • Avoid screens for at least 30 minutes before sleeping.

  • Eat magnesium-rich snacks like almonds or bananas to promote relaxation.

🚫 Avoid: Coffee or energy drinks after Iftar if you want quality sleep!

🌙 4. Manage Stress & Keep Your Mind Clear

Ramadan is a time for peace. But life’s daily stresses can get in the way.

Breathe and Reflect

  • Try simple breathing exercises: inhale 4 sec, hold 4, exhale 6.

  • Incorporate dhikr throughout the day to stay centred.

Don’t Overcommit

  • It’s ok to say ‘no’ to non-essential events.

  • Keep a simple Ramadan journal—reflect on your progress.

🚫 Avoid: Doom-scrolling social media. Protect your mental energy.

🌙 5. Stay Active—But Be Strategic

Movement boosts your mood and helps digestion, but you don’t want to drain your energy.

When to Exercise

  • Light walk or stretching before Iftar.

  • Moderate workout 1–2 hours after Iftar.

🚫 Avoid: HIIT or intense cardio while fasting—it’ll leave you depleted.

🌙 6. Stay Productive While Honouring Your Fast

Fasting can affect your mental clarity. Structure your day to work with your energy peaks.

Use Your Peak Energy Times

  • Early morning (after Fajr) is best for deep focus work, Quran reading, or studying.

  • Do admin or lighter tasks when your energy dips.

Set Spiritual & Practical Goals

  • Break big goals into daily bits.

  • Use a Ramadan tracker for prayers, Quran, and good deeds.

Make This Ramadan Your Most Energised Yet

Ramadan isn’t about perfection—it’s about balance. By making small, mindful changes to your eating, sleeping, movement, and mindset, you can stay energised and productive while drawing closer to Allah.

May this month be filled with energy, barakah, and spiritual growth for you and your family. 🌙✨
