What’s even more inspiring is that Islamic teachings emphasise mindfulness in both worship and daily life, encouraging self-awareness, patience, and trust in Allah during difficult times.
Mindfulness in Islam
Mindfulness is deeply rooted in Islamic teachings. The Qur’an reminds us to reflect on our actions, thoughts, and surroundings. In Surah Al-Imran (3:191), Allah describes those who are mindful of Him as people who:
“Remember Allah while standing, sitting, and lying on their sides.”
This serves as a reminder to remain conscious of Allah at all times.
Additionally, Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:
“The strong believer is better and more beloved to Allah than the weak believer, while there is good in both.” (Sahih Muslim)

The discipline of waking up early, praying, and engaging in Dhikr fosters resilience as you navigate daily challenges.

In his book Atomic Habits, James Clear explains how small daily changes lead to significant long-term improvements. This principle applies to mindfulness and resilience:
✔ Start with just 5 minutes of deep breathing or reflection after Salah.
✔ Keep a gratitude journal to record blessings and moments of mindfulness.
✔ Slowly integrate longer periods of Dhikr, reflection, or breathing exercises into your routine.

Performing Salah with mindfulness, focusing on each movement and verse, helps you stay present and connected to Allah. Salah acts as a moment of reflection, releasing stress and strengthening spiritual resilience.
2. Deep Breathing – Instant Calm in Stressful Moments
Taking a few moments for deep, mindful breathing can instantly reduce stress. Try diaphragmatic breathing:
1️⃣ Inhale deeply through your nose for 4 seconds
2️⃣ Hold your breath for 4 seconds
3️⃣ Exhale slowly through your mouth for 6-8 seconds
This simple technique lowers cortisol levels, bringing calmness and clarity.
3. Dhikr (Remembrance of Allah) – The Key to Inner Peace

A Personal Reflection on Resilience and Mindfulness
Over the past seven years, as I battled cancer, I experienced some of my most difficult moments. I can say without a doubt that developing mindful habits and building structured routines played a major role in my healing process and helped me stay mentally strong.
Whatever challenges you may be facing, know that incorporating mindfulness into your daily life—through Islamic practices or modern techniques—is a powerful step toward building resilience.
By staying present, practicing Salah, engaging in Dhikr, and establishing strong routines, you can develop the mental and emotional strength needed to face life’s difficulties with calmness and purpose.
